The snow mound next to where we came up to the crater rim, next to where we dropped our packs, THAT apparently is the Columbia Crest! :-(

After looking at the survey disk we photographed, something just didn't look "quite right" about it as a benchmark. So unable to sleep, I dug around a little. And found that according the USGS, "DESCRIBED BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1956 LOCATED ON SUMMIT OF MT. RAINIER. SUMMIT CONSISTS OF TWO POINTS ABOUT 400 FT APART IN N.-S. DIRECTION AND ABOUT SAME ELEVATION BEING SITUATED ON WEST RIM OF CIRCULAR CRATER ABOUT 1200 FT IN DIAMETER. STATION IS ON RIM ON BARE GROUND, 218 FT NE. OF NORTH AND HIGHEST TOP WHICH HAS A PERMANENT SNOW MOUND AND IS KNOWN AS COLUMBIA CREST."

We apparently visited the highest rocky point on the crater, but not the Columbia Crest itself.

Dammit, dammit, dammit.

Well...for all intents and purposes, close enough!! :-P If the snow mound ever melts...Indyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07438244322637657187noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9041399271665151628.post-37215342980585054462009-07-30T08:58:21.079-04:002009-07-30T08:58:21.079-04:00"on the trail by 1am"
